Amarillo College Fitness Programs Draw Record Student Participation This Year
Campus figures released this month point to stronger local interest in structured physical activity across Amarillo colleges.
How we reported this
Amarillo College reported a 22 percent jump in student participation in intramural and club sports during the 2025-2026 academic year compared with the prior period.
The increase arrives as summer enrollment opens at area campuses and local recreation departments prepare fall schedules. Officials track the numbers through registration systems that log everything from weekly practices to weekend tournaments, giving a clearer picture of how young adults spend time outside classrooms.
Campus and neighborhood programs drive numbers
Amarillo College runs its main fitness offerings from the Washington Street campus, where students use the indoor track and weight room on weekday evenings. West Texas A&M University, located just south of the city line, added a new sand volleyball league this spring that drew 180 participants across six teams. Both schools coordinate with the Amarillo Parks and Recreation Department to reserve fields at Memorial Park along I-40 for larger events.
These sites sit near established neighborhoods such as the Barrio and the Route 66 corridor, where residents often walk or bike to practices. The shared facilities cut travel time for students who live off campus in apartments near 34th Street.
Survey numbers and local benchmarks
A May 2026 internal report from Amarillo College counted 1,850 unique student participants in at least one organized activity, up from 1,510 the year before. The same document noted that 68 percent of those students also used the campus wellness center at least twice a week. Average cost per semester for full intramural access remains $45, a figure unchanged since 2023.
Citywide, the Parks Department logged 4,200 youth and young-adult registrations for summer leagues that began June 15. That total includes overflow spots filled by college students whose semesters ended in May.
Students who want to join upcoming sessions can visit the Amarillo College recreation office before July 25 or register online through the West Texas A&M athletics portal. Early sign-ups secure preferred practice times at Memorial Park fields before the fall rush begins.
