Amarillo MPO 2024 Federal Transportation Projects List
Amarillo MPO releases $62 million in federal highway, transit and bike project obligations for fiscal 2024 across Amarillo, Canyon, Potter and Randall Counties.

The Amarillo Metropolitan Planning Organization has issued its required annual listing of transportation projects that received federal funding obligations during fiscal year 2024. The document covers highway, transit and bicycle-pedestrian work across Amarillo, Canyon and portions of Potter and Randall Counties.
Federal law under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act directs the MPO to release the list each year. The report covers obligations recorded from October 1, 2023, through September 30, 2024. An obligation represents the federal government’s formal commitment to reimburse its share of project costs once the state or grantee requests the funds.
Highway and interchange work
Two large highway projects account for the bulk of the obligated dollars. Federal-Aid Project 2024806 on IH 27 carried $54,095,073 in federal obligations for reconstruction of the US 60/US 87 interchange and for illumination upgrades between Bell Street and Hillside Road. A separate IH 40 project, Federal-Aid Project 2020549, received $750,000 for Phase II work between BIH 40-D and FM 2590.
Another Federal-Aid Project 2023467 on SL 395 from Garfield Street to Ross Street was obligated $4,815,880 for construction of bicycle and pedestrian facilities. The MPO’s offices at 808 S. Buchanan St. in Amarillo coordinated the listing with the Texas Department of Transportation.
Transit obligations
Five transit projects under the 5307 program also received obligations. Project A20T01S(24) for operating expenses totaled $4,798,187, of which $2,399,094 came from federal sources. Project A20T09S(24) for transfer facility replacement carried $2,661,368 overall, including $2,129,094 federal. Smaller obligations covered preventive maintenance, training and ADA paratransit service.
Because an obligation only commits funds, the listed projects are not required to begin or finish construction inside the same fiscal year. The MPO states that the federal commitment allows the projects to proceed with reimbursement once work is executed.
