Amarillo Plans Major Street Resurfacing Project for 2025-2026

The City of Amarillo has begun work on its 2025-2026 Street Maintenance Project, which will apply resurfacing treatments to residential streets across multiple neighborhoods based on each road's current condition.

This effort comes at a time when routine upkeep helps the city avoid costlier full rebuilds later. Timely surface work prevents water from reaching the road base, which can add years to the usable life of local streets without the extended closures that accompany complete reconstruction.

Project Scope and Current Tracking

The program covers more than 17 miles of arterial roadways under a contract valued at more than 11 million dollars, with a scheduled completion date in 2026. A live map on the city website shows which streets are slated for work in the next 48 hours so residents can plan around active zones.

Treatment choices vary by location and take into account driveway layouts, street widths, alley access, and nearby neighborhood features. The city notes that these decisions also adjust for weather patterns, material prices, and available funding each season.

Practical Steps for Residents

Drivers are asked to follow posted signs and barricades and to avoid parking on streets during scheduled maintenance. Newly treated surfaces should remain clear until the contractor reopens them to traffic.

Any vehicle moved by crews will be placed nearby on a side street outside the work area, and the city states there is no charge or impoundment for the relocation. Residents concerned about tree branches that might interfere with equipment can contact city staff to discuss trimming needs ahead of time.
